DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

“So every individual has a responsibility to be concerned about himself enough to discover what he is made for.  After he discovers his calling he should set out to do it with all of the strength and power in his being.  He should do it as if God Almighty called him at this particular moment in history to do it.  He should seek to do his job so well that the living, the dead, or the unborn could not do it better.”      Martin Luther King Jr.

One day while lounging about a coffee shop reading The Measure of A Man I was, quite literally, stunned by the above quote.  On my best days this excerpt is utterly inspiring.  On most days however it’s a powerful indictment of my apathy.  I wanted to reconcile these extremes by exploring the essential nature of a calling, so I began writing The Evidence Of Hope.  I believed the best way to unearth these truths was to put this conversation on the table in front of individuals who were radically living out their calling in response to the oppression in their midst.

CAST

Peter Kuta (Kenya)
Peter was inspired by the corruption around him to become a servant leader in order to mediate the conflicts he saw in his country and throughout Africa.  According to Transparency International, 78% of dealings with the Police in Kenya involve bribery.  He decided to confront these injustices by joining the police force and refusing to take bribes that regularly exceed his annual income, knowingly putting his life at risk.  Peter’s convictions have produced both, great successes and powerful enemies.

Tania Meza (Honduras)
UNICEF believes that nearly 2,000 children in Honduras live by scavenging in city dumps.  Tania Meza, the daughter of a political revolutionary, overcame her painful childhood of fear and neglect, and now wants to inspire children and their families who work in the city dump site to change their lives.  She is a fighting what she calls the culture of garbage by excavating these children, these diamonds, from a life without dignity and hope.  She has chosen her own revolutionary path, running a center that holistically cares for the needs of more than 200 children and their community.

Oscar Magallenes (Philippines)
Oscar Magallenes was inspired by his father, an honest politician in a corrupt system.  During the martial law period of De Marcos, Oscar took to the streets to demand political change.  But after his own transformation he realized that real change comes through the transformation of individuals.  He gave up his successful business to become a pastor.  The credibility he established serving the needs of his city led to the community seeking his opinion on navigating the broken political system.  The politicians then sought out Oscar’s endorsement giving him the opportunity to speak truth to power.  Today he is inspiring the leaders of his country to restore the dignity lost by decades of corruption and greed.
